Wi-Fi on New York commuter trains

Dominic Basulto interviews Craig Plunkett about the potential (or not) of rolling out Wi-Fi on the commuter rails serving New York City. Plunkett: "I don't know if its a lack of will or concern, or the reservation of the MTA as a private hunting ground for firms represented by well-connected lobbyists, but in the three years I've been trying, I haven't met a single person that was even willing to champion the idea..." As a Metronorth commuter who has his laptop in bag on every twice daily trip and pines for connectivity, I have mixed feedback for you. On the one hand, I personally would love to have wifi onboard and know many others would as well. But the fact is that 1) the trains we take (to connecticut at least) are now over 40 YEARS old and falling apart at the seams. It is a hotbutton issue that is top of mind for every commuter and will make it difficult to find support for spending time, effort or money on anything else. Furthermore, so many people have blackberries providing the only thing they really care about - email - that your support base may not be as strong as one might think.
Regardless I wish you all the luck in the world and thank you for any effort spent on wiring my commute!

The great thing about our system and proposal for the MTA is that it doesn't cost the MTA anything, nor does it require any significant effort on their part. I believe that there is a large support base of folks out there because after I tell people I put wi-fi on the Jitney, the next words out of their mouths are: "This would be great on the trains, have you talked to the railroad?" That's when I roll my eyes and sigh.
